Sometimes Advent draws our attention to all that is not as it should be…
It’s important for us to stop and reflect, and call to mind all the ways, even in our messy busy groping lives, even in this world that’s such a hodge podge, that hasn’t come together yet in that wholeness God has promised, there are so many things to be thankful for.
Some of them are simple things, and complicated things, and we’re not exactly sure how we feel about it things. We can say, thank you God for moving in this moment.
It’s not always easy to do, sometimes it’s like trying to fall asleep when you haven’t gotten everything done that you wanted to get done. Your mind keeps racing around the thing that you have to get from the grocery store tomorrow.
So let’s take some time. Now let’s be really intentional about giving thanks.

Let’s start with the easy things, the one word things. What are we thankful for?

Think about a time when something that you planned to go well, did. Some time when Murphy’s Law did not apply. What are we thankful for, in that frame?

Let’s think about a time or a person that gave a gift to us when we really had no reason to expect it. Something extra. It doesn’t have to be a big thing. What are we thankful for?

Let’s take it another level. Where when something was going wrong, was it ok? When something was going wrong, was it ok somehow?

The final level, I want to invite you to think about is the one that the scripture Mark read this morning is about. And that is in those times of crisis, where you had no logical basis or percentage analysis to assure you that something good would happen, when it was hard, when you had to wait for a long time, that faithfulness finally arrived. What are we thankful for?
